Limiting beliefs are sneaky. They slip in quietly, posing as truth, and before you know it, they’re running the show — holding you back from growth, visibility, and the success you’re meant to create.
As women entrepreneurs, we all carry stories about what we can’t do or who we’re not. But here’s the truth: just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.
What Are Limiting Beliefs?
A limiting belief is a thought you’ve accepted as fact — even though it’s not. These beliefs often come from past experiences, cultural messages, or childhood stories we’ve carried into adulthood. Left unchecked, they quietly shape how we show up in business and in life.
For me, it showed up in writing. Somewhere along the way, I decided I wasn’t a writer, that I had nothing new or worthwhile to say.
But when I ran that belief through a truth filter, here’s what I discovered:
- I have written, and my writing isn’t awful.
- I do have thoughts, experiences, and insights worth sharing.
- I’ve grown through every challenge I’ve faced — and those lessons can help others.
That’s the thing about limiting beliefs: when you hold them up to the light, most don’t hold up.
How Limiting Beliefs Hold Back Your Business
The danger isn’t just in believing something untrue — it’s in how those beliefs limit your business growth.
If you believe you’re not good enough to share your ideas, you stay quiet.
If you believe you’re not smart enough with money, you avoid looking at your numbers.
If you believe you’re too old to start something new, you stop before you even try.
And when you hold back, your ideal clients can’t find you, connect with you, or trust you.
Your business can’t grow if you’re hiding behind beliefs that don’t serve you.
Shifting the Question: Is It True?
Next time a limiting belief pops up, ask yourself:
- Is this really true?
- Is it absolutely true?
- How does this belief serve me? Does it move me forward or keep me stuck?
These questions create space for a shift. Instead of staying stuck in fear or self-doubt, you start to see possibilities.
What if you’re wrong about this belief?
What if you really are capable?
What if you got help with the part you struggle with — a bookkeeper, a writer, a mentor?
This approach comes from Byron Katie’s book Loving What Is, where she outlines four powerful questions that challenge limiting beliefs. Her work has deeply influenced how I process my own doubts and guide my clients through theirs.
Moving from Fear to Possibility
Limiting beliefs stir up fear and negative self-talk: I can’t. I’m not enough. This will never work. When fear drives the narrative, procrastination follows — and suddenly you’re stuck.
The shift comes when you lean into possibility instead:
- What if I’m 100% worthy of this work?
- What if I could free up time and energy by hiring support?
- What if moving past this belief propelled my business forward?
Every time you replace fear with what if, you create momentum.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Breaking free from limiting beliefs isn’t about forcing yourself to “just get over it.” It’s about compassion, awareness, and support.
We’re not meant to do this work in isolation. Guidance, collaboration, and accountability make all the difference. With the right partner or mentor, you can see beyond the story you’ve been telling yourself and step into the truth of what’s possible.
Final Thought
Your business deserves the real you — not the version hidden behind outdated beliefs. Question the thoughts that hold you back, shift your focus to possibility, and watch how your business begins to grow when you show up as your most authentic self.
